Theology Series – Sage

The scientific name for sage is Salvia Officinalis, part of which means "to heal" in Latin. Sage is typically used in rites of purification, whether through smudging (the process of using a smudge stick) or burning incense. Burning sage is common in many traditional cultures around the world; North American Native Ojibway and Cree ceremonies uses sage smudges to cleanse and give prayers to the Creator. Many cultures even attribute medicinal properties that can help relieve headaches and sinus congestion.
